I WENT HERE. Actually I first went to preschool
at VJCC Valley Jewish Community Center, then
I entered Victory Elementary from kgn to 6 grade
Victory Blvd Elementary was built in 1924
as seen above, th road on the right top side
is Victory Blvd, named for our Victory in WWI.
That building is gone but the spirit and school remain.
At least once a year we had EVENTS staged on the
asphalt play yard. It could be the LAPD showing
car demonstrations, or the ZOO would send a
truck sponsored by Sears full of animals to see.
Sometimes there would be a 'pay event' like a
small circus or a Western show...
We see the Wild West
visiting Victory Boulevard
Elementary with a special show

who rode his horse
and performed rope tricks,
he also rode in many
parades for years.

The LUER FRANKS company sent this rocket advertisement
out to various market openings. Children could go inside and
sit in the spaceship and watch a commercial laden cartoon.
Here it is in Sunland and I saw it myself as a child in the
Valley Plaza Shopping Center at Alexanders MarketThe same rocket in
'mothballs' somewhere
in Arizona.

Built in 1896 by Southern Pacific Railroad
at the corner of Lankershim Boulevard
and Chandler Street. There is a restoration
project starting in conjunction

Steve Baskin who's
family were part owners
of this unique
SoCal ice cream store.
A long gone supermarket chain of the 1950's
to 60's absorbed by Smart & Final.
There was one near Oxnard on
Lankershim in North Hollywood
with it's tall " T " icon.
There was another in the Valley Plaza that
was a small shopping center with small shops
on one side of the market and also a shoe repair
and Chef's chicken bbq.

during the late 50's. A major L.A. restaurant
chain called Hody's. There was one at Hollywood
& Vine, and two at La Brea & Rodeo. They had a
clown mask menu for kids. There was a coffee
shop and dining room including a bakery.
There was a major fire and it was never rebuilt.

BOLTON HALL
In the early 1900's a SOCIAL movement
brought people together in
"LITTLE LANDS".
This movement subsided, yet people
continued to settle in the foothill areas
between the
VERDUGO HILLS and the SAN GABRIELS, the ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST.
The community
building
was known as the
CLUBHOUSE.
The name of the
meeting place / city hall / jail
was BOLTON HALL,
coming from the name of
local hero - Bolton Hall.
In 1932, the City Of Los Angeles,
annexed the area, and the building
was used for various city departments.
In 1959, the Parks and Recreation
almost torn the building down.
In 1960, Assemblyman Tom Bane
introduced legislation in Sacramento
and in 1962 Bolton Hall was declared
L.A. CITY HISTORICAL
MONUMENT #2
(Monument#1 is Avila Abobe in the Old Plaza)
1967 brought restoration funds,
yet do to inflation
and budget constraints
the upgrading had
not been completed until the
CELEBRATION of December, 1980.
So, any community can
save its historic architectual structures.

John Steven McGroarty, Renaissance Man of the Verdugos
The McGroarty Arts Center is the former home
of California Poet Laureate, Congressman,
dramatist, journalist, and historian John Steven
McGroarty (1862-1944) and his wife Ida.
JS McGroarty was a columnist for the Los Angeles Times
for over 40 years and wrote eleven
books and seven plays. He gained international fame with
his Mission Play pageant that
established a world record run. While in Congress,
McGroarty worked to protect the elderly
and Native Americans. He was proclaimed Poet Laureate by
the California State Legislature
in 1933.
The Rancho Chuparosa
The McGroarty home, set in the tranquil Verdugo foothills
of Tujunga, was built in 1923. Like
many homes of its time, much of it was constructed with
rocks found in the soil or possibly from
the nearby Tujunga Wash. The home features a large
veranda with a spectacular view of
surrounding oaks, the sprawling city below, and the
majestic San Gabriel Mountains to the
north. The interior has a large hall where exhibitions,
banquets, large classes, community
meetings, and performances are held; upstairs there are
additional rooms for smaller
classes. In the basement popular ceramic classes are
held for which three onsite kilns are
kept very busy. The home also features McGroarty's
personal library full of antiques and
numerous mementos of his life and accomplishments.
The McGroarty Arts Center Today
The McGroarty Arts Center plays a pivotal role in the
cultural life of the local community
throughout the year by hosting affordable ongoing eight
week classes for adults and children
in painting, music, crafts, acting, yoga, creative
writing--and many, many more varieties of fine,
literary, and performing arts. Besides this fundamental
mission and the role of preserving the
legacy of John Steven McGroarty, the Center also serves
as a venue for artists to display or
perform their work. The main hall is available to the
community to rent for special ocassions.

The center is now operated by the Friends of the
McGroarty Arts Center and receives only
minimal city funding. It is mostly private donors and
philanthropically-minded organizations
that have kept the center afloat. Please take the first

Phil's Diner served the railroad business
area of 1900's North Hollywood. Located
on Chandler just off Lankershim many
blue collars workers came to this modest
diner.

My family moved to Tujunga in 1940. My parents lived in the same house
on Valmont Street for 36 years. I bought my first home at the corner of
Hillrose and Commerce, in 1960. My parents, my bother's family and my
family all moved away in 1973. We settled in another small town within a
major metropolitan area, Laguna Beach. My husband and I occasionally
forget ourselves and call "Pacific Coast Highway" "Foothill Blvd."
A cousin of my worked at the movie house in the late 40's and early
50's. As kids we walked to the show every Saturday for the matinee that
included serials, cliffhangers, and lots and lots of westerns, as well
as movies about World War II. It is sad to see what has happened to, not
only the movie house, but the entire area over the years.
It was a wonderful rural area within the City of Los Angeles to grow up
in. We lived on a large piece of land and had horses, chickens, ducks,
and even a goat. We hand the first built-in home pool in the area.
Good luck with your efforts to save the structure.

I recall when I was growing up, I use to go to Busy Bee Drug Store. For 25 cents I would get a Root Beer Float, then for 10 cents, I'd get 3 candy
bars. I would take the candy and go to the Hilltop theatre. I also remember they had a talent contest which I won for playing my accordian on stage
with a friend named Kay. I think we won $50.00. and had our picture in the local paper. I still have this article somewhere. I loved this theatre.
Foster Freeze was right next door too. It made summer days special and memories that will never be forgotten. I can still smell the popcorn...

We lived on Beckett St. in Tujunga when my sister and I walked down to the
show to see The Nutty Professor(Jerry Lewis)Flubber,The Ghost nd Mr. Chicken.
Later in the seventy's I played in a band Triad for a youth organization
keeping teen in off the street.
On Feb 28 ['99] we are doing a music festival in Dallas and a event called "Rockers
Against Hunger" where the admission price is a canned good. Maybe you should
consider doing fund raisers to save the Hilltop. Or open a Classic Movie
Theatre that features old movies.... Isn't it about time we saw the Duke on
the big screen again?

I am now in my mid 30s, meaning I can remember the " Rainbow theater " at its
useful best during my younger years. I remember sticky carpet, 2 movies for
one nice price, somewhere to go LOCALLY for entertainment that was fun and
safe .
Of course now the single screen theater is a dying breed because of the "multi-
box "
multi screen theaters that you have to drive to. i remember frozen bon bons,
popcorn with real butter and no guilt, a few arcade games in the lobby to kill
a few minutes tween movies. i hope some how, someway we can revive the " good
ol days" in that theater just a litle bit. It would be nice to be able to
spend a entertaining evening in your own neighborhood. I t would be a real
kick too!

I live very close to the theater now and would someday like to see the
building in use so I can take my daughter when she is of age.
We must do something with this beautiful building. As most businesses in
Tujunga are closing their doors, we need to increase commerce in Tujunga.
Right now, the building is being used by drug addicts, homeless bums and
alcoholics. It scares me to even go to the businesses near the theater.

As I drive down Foothill Blvd. everyday on my way home from work, my eyes
stare with disgust at the proliferation of unsightly used car lots, and
greasy auto shops with their broken down cars heaped upon one another. As my
eyes fix on you I have hope that Sunland Tunjung will one day be the
community it was mint to be and not just a place where abandon cars go to die
and shopping carts hang out on every street corner. I see you as a start of
Sunland Tujunga bringing its history forward.
Names like; Little Lands, Los Terrinetos, William Ellsworth, George Harris,
Verdugo, etc., should appear on street signs, buildings, park stones, maybe
Commerce Street can be Known as "Little Land Plaza" with its original street
lamps brought back. Sunland Tujung has a lot of history hidden away and
bringing back the Theater will be the first step toward bringing the history
of our community out.

"Tujunga-Rainbow-Hilltop". Before I became a member of the board of directors of
VHTV, our local Community Television Access Station, I always wondered if VHTV
could move into the old place? Boy...VHTV sure could use the room and the old theatre
I feel would be a perfect location for us do "Live" and "Taped" shows for our
communiy-at-large... but this is my opinion. If we can find a way to save the old
place... that would be nice, and it's use as a historical site would benefit all. Please
update me and let me know what the latest on the old place is? If it sounds possible... I
will bring this subject up at our next VHTV board
meeting?
